MONKEY ISLAND 2: LE CHUCK's REVENGE
"Ithought I'd killed the Ghost Pirate LeChuck for good. Wrong. How many times can
that bloated old fool die? Other pirates tell me there's no escape. 'When LeChuck
wants you dead, you're dead,' they say. Legend has it that the treasure of Big
Whoop holds the key to great power... I must find it before LeChuck finds me."
Excerpted from "The Memoirs of Guybrush Threepwood,
the Monkey Island Years"
"This is the sequel to Secret of Monkey Island. Guybrush Threepwood, the mighty
pirate who can hold his breath for ten minutes, could have lived quietly and
happily with his sweetheart Elaine, the governor of Melee Island. But the restless
pirate spirit won't let Guybrush in peace! Things don't go very well with Elaine,
and Guybrush (now with a beard) embarks on a new adventure: searching for the
legendary treasure of Big Whoop! However, the evil ghost pirate LeChuck hasn't
left the stage yet. His subordinates are trying to bring him back from the dead
one more time. Will Guybrush be able to defeat his archenemy again?" (mobygames)
Hard to believe, this game is even better than it's amazing predecessor and a
triumph of interactive storytelling. Guybrush tells the whole length of his quest
while hanging on a thin rope over a deep pit, the treasure in one hand, and the
game comes back to this point later on to complete the tale with a kind of weird
ending. There are loads of places to visit and you get the full freedom to
complete all tasks - mainly to find the four parts of a treasure map - in no
particular order. Within this frame are some of the greatest plot twists in IF
history, like the appearance of Guybrush's parents in a dream when he gets knocked
on the head and who give him some strange hints for later on - in the form of a
song!
The caribbean atmosphere of piratery, swashbuckling and treasure hunt is always
present then, in the incredible looking hand-painted graphics, the great
soundtrack - I-muse system in perfection! - and the nice vodoo touch. There are
sevreal dealings with the dead or undead, so be prepared! The amount of details
makes the game worthy of several re-plays then (simply check all the entries in
the library catalogue at Phatt Island!), as do the many unforgettable dialogue
lines. I laughed my arse off when Elaine and Guybrush finally met again, only to
start a funny discussion on their (non-existing) relationship. You got a coice of
answers ranging from 'I can't live without you anymore!' to 'Nice to see you
again! Where's the beer in this dump?'. The game doesn't take itself - and
anything else - too seriously which is great fun all the way. From a spitting
contest (with all the appropriate sounds, see left) to old shipwrecks, from
abusive grog-drinking to grave-robbery, this one's simply got it all!
"LeChuck's Revenge" utilizes the same command-based SCUMM interface and branching
dialogue system that were used in its predecessor. As in MONKEY ISLAND 1 it's
impossible to get stuck or to die, no matter what you do, a nice feature really.
The display of the inventory is new, instead of words you see graphics of your
numerous belongings here. Also very important for the atmosphere are the typical
LUCSAFILM cut-scenes, that give some imformation on the real danger of LeChuck
without Guybrush knowing about it. Creates an ever-present suspense effect.
You should definitely start playing with the first part of the series to get all
the insider jokes of the game, but if you enjoyed MONKEY ISLAND 1 you will go
crazy about that one! Guaranteed!
