Shame on us - we didn't manage to drop a line about the small Mungo's Hifi tour going on in
Germany right now in time. Awesome gig
in Chemnitz last Saturday, with dancehall legend
Brother Culture,
Echomaniac
Sound, Rizla and some disrupt live action. If you missed that one
you
absolutely
should drop by
at one of the next two upcoming nights!
Mungo's HiFi is a Reggae Sound System in the original Roots
tradition, with a big twist of Scottishness. Named after Glasgow's
great founder, they incorporate a d.i.y. attitude that has seen
them build their own formidable PA which comes into its own
when let loose in the fields - after numerous outings at festivals
and free parties the scoop bassbins sound the best when in
touch with the soil.
Playing sessions week in, week out for the last 6 years in Glasgow
and all over Europe, they have honed the art of pulling off epic
sets, as well as working closely with some of the best live reggae
MCs such as Ranking Joe, Top Cat, Tippa Irie, Kenny Knots and Afrikan Simba.
Mungo's HiFi have also built their own studio to make
productions that have stormed the underground, getting heavy
plays by Jah Shaka and Iration Steppas as well as breaking into
the mainstream through DJs such as Mr Scruff and Andy
Weatherall who have both championed their sound.
Through their highly sought after releases along with Brother Culture ("ING", "Wickedness" and a
whole
album) on Ninja Tunes and Dubhead they have built a following worldwide
which they
are
now reaching through their own record label "Scotch Bonnet". With eight releases
to date,
including the killah 10"s on
the "Belly Ska" riddim and their latest "Mary Jane" smasha in a proper
old-school digital Unity style, there are nuff releases to follow over the next few months.

Mungo's niceness all over the place. Covering a wide range of
various styles: there's the
kicking Roots tradition, Brother
Culture's "Wickedness" and
"ING" (being re-pressed with new

Ranking Joe and Marina P on the "Belly Ska" riddim. And there's
old-school digital Reggae in the fine Unity tradition, with legends
from that era like Jahtari's favourite Mikey Murka (Jahtari EP
coming on vinyl soon, btw!), Kenny Knots or Carl Meeks.

We had the honour to be invited over to Scotland for two Jahtari gigs back in March. Playing live on
the awesome 16-kW-soundsystem that will definitely cause Nessie to die of heart failure sometime
soon.

Mungo's Hi Fi is Tom Tattersall, Douglas Paine and Craig Macleod.
