Back in circulation after over a decade, Jahtari’s seminal “Jahtarian Dubbers Vol. 1 EP” receives the long-awaited reissue treatment, reviving the raw, 8-bit-infused dub vibes that defined a new era of digital roots music.

Originally released in 2008 and quickly disappearing into dub obscurity, this heavyweight 12” returns with four essential cuts that perfectly encapsulate the Jahtari sound—where chiptune meets the echo chamber.

The EP kicks off with Blaze Dem’s “Roots Defender,” a hypnotic concotion of deep basslines and eerie samples from a Swedish cult ritual, setting a heavy tone right from the start. disrupt’s cinematic “Kozure Okami” follows, channeling Black Ark vibes through 8-bit synth explorations.

On the flip, John Frum delivers the hauntingly beautiful “January Dub,” while Rootah’s slomo slammer “Holy Mount Part 2” closes the EP with Lynchian, echo-soaked vibrations that linger long after the needle lifts.

Timeless tracks, mastered by CGB-1 at D&M in Berlin for maximum impact. Pivotal piece of Dub music!

Ten unreleased deadly digi riddims from the myspace era by Copenhagen’s Maffi crew, dubbed out into 3D space by disrupt in 2024.

Taking its name from a crucial Firehouse mixtape series, “Mastermind Computer Style” is full of raw nuggets of simplistic beauty, all made in trusty Propellerhead Reason between 2006 and 2009. Some of these riddims were a firm part of early Jahtari live shows, played out on sound systems all over the globe, but never have been cut to vinyl until now.

Watch out for heavy synth driven 8-bit floaters like “Morkt Igen” or “Another Lara”, a Disco Dub version of the Kashif bomb “I’m in Love” by Evelyn King. And check oddities like “Skudduel” or “Jon Jovi”, an alien mutation of the Jon Bon riddim which became Solo Banton’s classic “Talk To Me“.

Raw, primitive CyberDancehall at its best, nostalgic and oddly futuristic at the same time, this album is quickly becoming RoboCop’s favourite playlist when going to work.

…………………………………………………………………

Maffi Promotions a.k.a. Maffi Boys come straight outta 1773 Kbh V, Copenhagen, Denmark. Originally founded in 1990 by the two homeboys, lazy body Moog and Junior the Rat, Maffi Promotions have been a steady producer of simple digital riddims for years. Hanging out in the streets of Hummel City Junior & Moog used to entertain their friends with the primitve riddims of the Maffi sound. Not knowing that they would do the exact same thing fifteen years later, they continued to believe that one day they would move up the ladder, break out of the underground and reach for the stars.

Now, after finally adopting a little sense of realism, the two homeboys have realised that stardom is nothing compared to spamming people on myspace. So the two stoners decided to get a couple of friends together and turn up the bass online. Together with their sound crew FIREHOUSE, Maffi deal nuff weed and gyals!

Maffi Boys are very dedicated to the art of playing Sensible World of Soccer, rolling weed joints with Manitou tobacco and keeping it real in a Vesterbro-style. So watch out! And don’t test! We’ll be putting up new riddims on a weekly basis. We have nuff things brewing – including a delicious chicken!
………………………………………………………………

Growing up in the streets of Hummel City, Vesterbro, MOOG learned the pleasures of sleeping late, playing Sensible World Of Soccer and picking up hot gyals at an early age. He has spent most of his life trying to master these crucial skills. Taking a break from the dog race, Moog is currently focused on reaching a higher understanding of reggae-science and weedology.

JUNIOR experienced the necessity of rolling well-made spliffs at an early age. Incorporating the aestethic heritage of Scandinavian design, he has spent most of his life perfectionizing this old and traditional art form. Junior is currently taking his ph.d. in digital reggae by buying crates of 80’s 7″ and selecting for his sound system Firehouse.

Two lost & found lofi nuggets from the Jahtari vault, appearing on 7″ floppy disc for the very first time.

Arcade Addict” is the original Dub cut of Mikey Murka‘s “Sensi Addict”, a version of the sweet Ujama classic that came out as a Jahtari Net-7″ in 2006. Sprinkled with field recordings from early 80s Arcade Halls (done by kids with a walkman) this little oddity never made it to vinyl until now.

Proper Tings” on B is taken from a home made video from 2012, originally made to show the capabilities of a DIY Synth project using a Commodore C64 home computer sound chip, the growly SID synth.

Sounds are made from scratch, sequenced out on a MPC – and the ensuing Dub jam turned out to be a lucky shot, eventually shaping up as Paul St. Hilaire‘s “Who Goes There“. There’s a raw, beautiful 8bit magic to this Dub, finally making it to wax for the first time.

Synth & Sampler wizard Tom Giles (Clause Four / Modern Soul), responsible for bangers like “Mars Reprise” or the riddim for Pupajim‘s classic “International Farmer“, returns to Jahtari’s sonic fiction sublabel Zonedog with a utopian ambient project, The Electric Word.

Heavily inspired by a background in creative coding, techno-futurism and the UK counter culture ambient scene of the early 1990s this tape is a psychedelic deep dive into lush early-digi synth textures that feel like lying on a fluffy carpet, layered with field recordings and samples to tell the story.

Highly addictive journey through patterns, shapes and vibes, ideal for repeat listening sessions. Out digitally and as very limited tape edition!

Music & artwork by The Electric Word (Tom Giles).

The UK counter culture ambient scene came about post-Acid house in 1990 but didn’t last too long. The KLF, The Orb and the Future Sound Of London were the key players in this but they all had slightly different approaches.

Whilst all of them are very psychedelic and counter-cultural, it was FSOL who made this style explicitly techno-utopian. Gary Cobain has compared their second album, Lifeforms, to the poem “All Watched Over By Machines of Loving Grace”, whilst their third album, ISDN, was compiled from performances they made pioneering live streaming in 1994.

They actively looked forward to a time when artists could deal directly with fans, where record labels and their corporate bosses wouldn’t exist, and we’d all be a lot freer. Obviously that didn’t pan out, but their ideas came straight from early issues of Wired Magazine (whose forerunner was called The Electric Word).

Beyond DJ sets by the Orb and their crew, probably the night which most defined the scene was Telepathic Fish, which was put on by Strictly Kev and Mixmaster Morris aka The Irresistible Force. Global Communications were also related to this (and obvs their name is quite techno-utopian).

There was also Spacetime Continuum from San Francisco, who also collaborated with Move D under the name Reagenz and ran the Reflective Records label.

And there was some stuff which veered off into dub, like some of the early releases on Zion Train’s label Universal Egg. Or also things that were on the hippy / Asian / dub connection like Black Star Liner, Transglobal Underground, Loop Guru. And then there was the more Warp side of things.

Whilst this particular scene was relatively short lived in the UK, the techno-utopianism of Silicon Valley is still with us. Whether we are talking about Elon Musk’s brain-computer interface or Mark Zuckerberg’s global communication network, one thing is clear: we live in the world the Future Sound of London imagined somewhere in a backroom of a squat in South London in the early 90s.

Great energy in this mix with lots of bangers that aged remarkably well, from a time before Discogs, Youtube or Shazam.
