Two lost & found lofi nuggets from the Jahtari vault, appearing on 7″ floppy disc for the very first time.

Arcade Addict” is the original Dub cut of Mikey Murka‘s “Sensi Addict”, a version of the sweet Ujama classic that came out as a Jahtari Net-7″ in 2006. Sprinkled with field recordings from early 80s Arcade Halls (done by kids with a walkman) this little oddity never made it to vinyl until now.

Proper Tings” on B is taken from a home made video from 2012, originally made to show the capabilities of a DIY Synth project using a Commodore C64 home computer sound chip, the growly SID synth.

Sounds are made from scratch, sequenced out on a MPC – and the ensuing Dub jam turned out to be a lucky shot, eventually shaping up as Paul St. Hilaire‘s “Who Goes There“. There’s a raw, beautiful 8bit magic to this Dub, finally making it to wax for the first time.

Synth & Sampler wizard Tom Giles (Clause Four / Modern Soul), responsible for bangers like “Mars Reprise” or the riddim for Pupajim‘s classic “International Farmer“, returns to Jahtari’s sonic fiction sublabel Zonedog with a utopian ambient project, The Electric Word.

Heavily inspired by a background in creative coding, techno-futurism and the UK counter culture ambient scene of the early 1990s this tape is a psychedelic deep dive into lush early-digi synth textures that feel like lying on a fluffy carpet, layered with field recordings and samples to tell the story.

Highly addictive journey through patterns, shapes and vibes, ideal for repeat listening sessions. Out digitally and as very limited tape edition!

Music & artwork by The Electric Word (Tom Giles).

The UK counter culture ambient scene came about post-Acid house in 1990 but didn’t last too long. The KLF, The Orb and the Future Sound Of London were the key players in this but they all had slightly different approaches.

Whilst all of them are very psychedelic and counter-cultural, it was FSOL who made this style explicitly techno-utopian. Gary Cobain has compared their second album, Lifeforms, to the poem “All Watched Over By Machines of Loving Grace”, whilst their third album, ISDN, was compiled from performances they made pioneering live streaming in 1994.

They actively looked forward to a time when artists could deal directly with fans, where record labels and their corporate bosses wouldn’t exist, and we’d all be a lot freer. Obviously that didn’t pan out, but their ideas came straight from early issues of Wired Magazine (whose forerunner was called The Electric Word).

Beyond DJ sets by the Orb and their crew, probably the night which most defined the scene was Telepathic Fish, which was put on by Strictly Kev and Mixmaster Morris aka The Irresistible Force. Global Communications were also related to this (and obvs their name is quite techno-utopian).

There was also Spacetime Continuum from San Francisco, who also collaborated with Move D under the name Reagenz and ran the Reflective Records label.

And there was some stuff which veered off into dub, like some of the early releases on Zion Train’s label Universal Egg. Or also things that were on the hippy / Asian / dub connection like Black Star Liner, Transglobal Underground, Loop Guru. And then there was the more Warp side of things.

Whilst this particular scene was relatively short lived in the UK, the techno-utopianism of Silicon Valley is still with us. Whether we are talking about Elon Musk’s brain-computer interface or Mark Zuckerberg’s global communication network, one thing is clear: we live in the world the Future Sound of London imagined somewhere in a backroom of a squat in South London in the early 90s.

ADD TAPE TO CART

Volume 1 of the Strasse E mixtape series by Rootah, who was a resident DJ at a local Leipzig techno club and obsessive record digger in the 1990s before starting Jahtari.

Lost & re-discovered, this first cassette was recorded in the early 2000s, mostly focusing on what was happening between Berlin, Detroit, Munich, Vienna and Chicago.

Great energy in this mix with lots of bangers that aged remarkably well, from a time before Discogs, Youtube or Shazam.

Comes with artwork by David Farris, with added hand-drawn Neon vibes. Limited copies!

Heavy hitting SNES-Funk album from Tapes, returning to Jahtari for his first full length LP with eight solid 16bit Slap Crackers!

Constructed with data rips from Super-Nintendo ROMs, a Sequential Circuits Drum Tracks and a heavy dose of Kawai K1, each of these gems unfold into epic compositional mastery reminiscent of 1980s Japanese kids TV, with sparkly sprinkles of synth wizardry thrown on top.

‘Funk Plates Vol. 1’ sees Tapes depart as a riddim driven Digi-Dub contributor with a sharp handbrake U-turn on the Neo high way to funky-town.

A perfect soundtrack for a spaced out Sunday morning and just as potent on the club hifi! (Quack!)

Six Black Hole jazz dubs by Cosmic Threat, coming together in one truely epic album straight from the astral echo chamber.

Jammed over various sessions in an empty Leipzig club during lockdown, Kiki Hitomi, disrupt and bass clarinet black belt Volker Hemken (from Gewandhausorchester Leipzig) are keeping the track structures in constant warp mode, psychically locking in with the machines and freely exploring all the sonic territory inbetween Sun Ra and Prince Jammy.

This highly hypnotic spiritual sequel to Kiki Hitomi’s ‘Karma No Kusari‘ (2016) comes on red vinyl and with hand-painted artwork by Ellen G.

‘Cosmic Threads’ was commissioned by Gewandhaus zu Leipzig as part of ‘Two Play To Play’. ‘Two Play To Play‘ was designed by Karen Laube and Matthias Krähenbiel and is produced and presented by Gewandhaus zu Leipzig. Vinyl funded by GvL Neustart.

Two really cool Rootah and disrupt lofi jams on some Wackies riddims (probably), with a cracked Ableton Live… Lots of love for this one.

Gritty loops and eroded synth-scapes tell the story of a trip across a world without water: a journey through parched and wind-swept lands, dried-out riverbeds, past vast garbage dumps, following the hydrogen fuel veins across the Big White, in search for that crucial part to fix your communities’ water pump: ‘The Water Chip’.

Each tape comes with hand-painted cover art by Ltd. Candy, each with a unique color scheme – photos can’t fully capture it.

‘…lost contact with scientist team looking into the energy signature on Psylos Prime. Just entered orbit, on my way to investig… SYSTEM ERROR—‘

Last words from seasoned psychonaut Disrupt, and the beginning of ‘Under Triple Suns’, a gripping SonicFiction paperback novel, cut to holo-disk for the very first time.

Dubbed-out loop clusters, foggy melody nebulas and hazy layers of alien field recordings are held together by otherworldly off-the-grid rhythms, shaping the experience into an highly immersive sonic tale of crash-landing on a mysterious planet.

Out on the Jahtari-sublabel Zonedog the album follows the trail of previous space exploration endaevours like ‘Omega Station‘ and ‘The Recreation Room‘. Coming with beautiful vintage-SciFi water color artwork by Ellen G.

DIGITAL (free download!)

Nerdcore Dub versions from ‘The Secret of Monkey Island I & II’ adventure game soundtracks (1990 / 91), the forgotten Voodoo-Reggae classics from the floppy disc age.

The original game soundtracks by Michael Z. Land, in all their uncanny 16bit-Soundblaster FM-synth glory, were a massive influence for Jahtari (weird computer game reggae!) – but could those soothing and somewhat wimpy tracks be translated into a Heavyweight Dub context, something that might work on a sound system?

Well, here are our attempts from around 2005 / 06: Meanwhile Deep Beneath the Island. Sixteen haunting tracks, optimized for guzzling grog, by Gamle Harlev Orchestra & Bo Marley, John Frum, Volfoniq and disrupt. Finished cuts, various dubs and plain demos, raised from the Undead, just for the torment of your ears!

OG artwork by Kristian Nordentoft. Available as FREE download on Bandcamp – and as limited tape run with alternate ‘Head of the Navigator’ cover!
