After his highly acclaimed album “Dis Side Ah TownRoger Robinson returns with a reel full of new tales about survival in a Dog Heart City. These stories, delivered in Robinson’s full vocal spectrum between low-end dub poetry tremors and haunting falsetto singing, are trying to make the invisible lives visible: giving people affected by gentrification, racism, unemployment and low wage work a sense of authority and aesthetic nobility.

Each song on this tape became a story in that city, while the tape itself is like the city holding these stories. “Nightshifttells about the workers who clean the buildings where power is held, and the contrast between their lives and where they clean. “Flowers” comments on the rate of young black men getting killed, where another victim dies even before the last mourning flowers have dried. There are stories about tower block life, the claiming of a postcode or how the city wears a Swastika like a proud badge in Post-Brexit UK.

This beautiful cassette collects a pile of special riddim cuts from the Jahtari vaults, from re-edited classics by Bo Marley, unreleased gems by John Frum, to completely new experiments, all lovingly dubbed live and soaked in analogue goodness.

Stunning hand-painted cover art by Kiki Hitomi.

WaqWaq [pron.: Wa-Ku Wa-Ku], Definition: to flutter or fly.

Shinsekai = New World, refers to the periphery of severe poverty and destitution in Osaka, Japan. Called Nishinari-ku it is home to many beautiful people.

Next level sounds coming from the Science Ninja Team WaqWaq Kingdom, re-charting dub territory as we know it with their highly addictive post-tribal epic Shinsekai (“New World”).

Driven by the trimba (a percussion instrument developed and mastered by Moondog) of Andrea Belfi  (Nils Frahm, Nonkeen, Mike Watt) ––  the ethereal voice of Kiki Hitomi (King Midas, Black Chow) is twisting through a fog of swirling arpeggiators and polyrhythmic textures, all brought together beautifully by bass- and mayhem expert Shigeru Ishihara (DJ Scotch Egg, Seefeel).

‘Shinsekai’ develops its very own language as each of the hypnotic tracks meanders through different stages of deepness and tension, evolving into the bigger picture of an album with a dazzling amount of intrinsic details.

Stunning artwork by Simon Fowler (Sunn O))), The Bug and many more), done in Hanga / relief printing style. Guest vocals on “Step Into The World” by Kathy Alberici. Mastered and cut for extra heaviness by Pole / Scapemastering Berlin.

Klaus Wunderlich meets King Tubby on this spaced out living room jam by the Gl. Harlev Organ Orchestra, three seasoned veteran musicians from the Danish underground (Bo Marley, Analogik, 100% Max Akwaaba).

The tracks, all one-take recordings done with just an old Technics organ, mutate through the various presets from the built in drum machine – tango? bossa? – while getting soaked in tape delays and subtle flute or guitar overdubs, driven by the surprisingly heavy basslines coming from the old organ speakers.

Playing the organ turned out to be a three men job: Benjamin Lesak on the two-layer keyboard, Kristian Nordenthoft kneeling on the floor to operate the bass pedals by hand, while Jesper Kobberoe took care of the beats. Recorded live with only a simple microfon this document captures everything, from pure vibes to problems with a runny nose.

This re-issue of a lost gem from 2009 (as ‘Bare Spil Noget Orgel‘ on Route 66) shows what can be done in just one day: you can make a whole record (including cover art)!

Belt up for a mind-altering journey through time and space stopping by Japanese enka, 8-bit psychedelica and mutated digi dub on this genre-defying long player from King Midas Sound’s Kiki Hitomi and Jahtari bossman disrupt.

Set against an intergalactic backdrop of riddims and soundscapes “Karma No Kusari” (“Chain Of Karma”) unfolds piece by piece, with Kiki’s otherworldly tone of voice providing a ghostly atmosphere that is at times unsettling but always achingly beautiful.

This gritty disc of cosmic vintage pop – entirely done without a computer – includes compositions by Maffi, the mysterious Tapes plus a transmission from the immortal Space Ape. With stunning artwork by Kiki herself “Karma No Kusari” is indispensible for any true space cadet.

One night in 2011 King Midas Sound‘s Roger Robinson returned to Brixton from touring and inadvertently walked into the centre of the London riots. Through the flames and smoke he felt compelled to tell the stories of the people he saw rioting on the street that night.

With disrupt‘s dub soundtrack highlighting the triumphs and tribulations in the lives of the people of Brixton, the album unfolds like a documentary film, extending from the epicentre of the riots and rippling out from there.

Roger showcases all his poetry and singing styles over the sonic tower blocks and underground caverns of disrupt’s dub soundscapes, evoking the golden era of dub poetry of the likes of Prince Far I, Big Youth and Linton Kwesi Johnson – a time when dub poetry made you dance in the club but also made you think on the way home.

Done with lots of voltage, old school samplers, DIY synths, home made delays, dictaphones and even onboard computer mics this gritty disc will take you straight to Brixton’s streets.

Naram – March Of
The Gremlins

NARAM
“March Of The Gremlins”

JTRLP05
release date: 20.01.2014
2LP vinyl, digital

VINYL SOLD OUT

The debut release from the newest antipodean addition to the Jahtarian stables is a double-LP-length digikal reggae opus filled with gritty minor- key riddims designed to wreak havoc on the cogs of the Babylon system.

The project was born in a most unlikely fashion, after naram crafted an 80s horror film-inspired riddim on a battered iPod while on a bicycle trip across the Middle East. The March of the Gremlins riddim then somehow found its way into the hands of disrupt – thus kicking off a truly outernational collaboration.

Along with the kiwi riddim builder, Gremlins features a roll call of legendary UK veterans on vocal duties – with the triumphant return of legendary 1980s fast chat pioneers Asher Senator and Peter King alongside the ones like Jah Screechy, Sammy Gold and Speng Bond. It also marks the debut of Leipzig’s rub-a-dub songstress Jane Bee and exquisite cover art from King MidasKiki Hitomi.

Despite being named for a riddim built on an iPod, this album is heavy on authentic analogue niceness – with an arsenal of vintage synths and studio gadgets used to full effect. And with disrupt on dubbing duties in his secret lab, the release is tied together by a lush, haunting atmosphere that’s been faithfully recorded to tape.

Like the furry mogwai creatures from the 1984 film of the same name, Gremlins is bound to kick up rumpus after dark so don’t sleep on this one!

The tape heads of the Jahtari echo machines have been finetuned, the reverb modules are rewired, the bass implant is set to maximum blast and now the third episode of our ongoing series called “Jahtarian Dubbers” is ready to rock your walkman for a long time to come.

Mikey Murka went up to the dancehall again, John Frum is back with a hauntingly beautiful dub, Maffi team up with Ranking Levy from MyLord Sound while the Jahtari Riddim Force is on the loose, El Fata rinses Tapes‘ smashing “Gold Love Riddim”, disrupt dug out a forgotten treasure from the vault and Rootah runs his tube delays into the red zone.

Wearing the black belt for beatmaking and new in the Jahtari camp is Monkey Marc (who supplied a wicked instrumental to the last Roots Manuva album). Our favourite sound system champions Mungo’s Hifi are about to blow your speakers alongside veteran Jim Nastics, plus there’s a very special Rootah version of a Dub Syndicate / Adrian Sherwood classic – with Lee Perry (!) on the mic, lazergun in hand, straightjacket and all. So better pack enough supplies for an interstellar trip – this one might take a while.

On this epic voyage Disrupt is pushing the genre boundaries of 8Bit-ChipHop, roots Dub and old-school gaming soundtracks into one big swirling Black Hole of low end mayhem. Raw, ultra-shuffling drum machine action and re-wired skanks create the gateway for a mind bending reference network of retro-SciFi movies, gaming classics and Dub soundscapes in infinite loop mode. All riding on a non-stop wave of subsonic bass blasts to ensure an intense outah space trip for all the 21st Century Planet Smashas out there.

The album comes with awesome bass-artwork by Jimmy Cauty (LC).

Mastered by Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin.
